I've decided to include at least
one article that completely embarrasses me. It reveals how stupid I
once was. The following horror story happened to me:
I got taken by a loan scam in
1996. I found the opportunity in a nationwide magazine called 'the
Nickle Ads'. Basically the ad said if I sent 200 bucks I could get a
loan for 5000. I talked to the company on the phone. They had office
noises in the background with other people taking orders. They
answered all kinds of questions. It sounded like a huge corporation
when I talked to them. I was young. It was my first (and last) scam.
Even worse, I sent them a money order. What a dummy!
I never heard another word from
them. I got scammed. Aaaargh! But that's not all!
The following week there was yet
another advertisement right next to the spot where the scam
had appeared in the Nickle Ads the week before. It said: "If you got
involved with that nasty loan scam, please call the following
telephone number so that we may help you retrieve your money". I
swallowed my pride and I called a number that appeared in the ad.
When I called the number (It was
a 900 number) I was charged 40 dollars for being put on hold by a
really nice lady. She told me that the scam was set up by a group in
Cananda. They had stolen over 100,000 dollars from people all over
the United States. I was put on hold again to wait for an 'advisor'.
Well, insult to injury, burnt again! It turned out that the 900
helpline was also a scam put out by the same company.
I remember the afternoon that I
discovered this. I could not decide if I should laugh or cry.
Finally I burst out laughing. I swore to learn all I cold about
business scams. It suddenly became quite funny and I started my
great adventure in business opportunity seeking and scam busting.
